Couples Massage in Salt Lake City: Cost, Tipping, and What to Expect
Booking a massage for two raises questions a solo massage never does. What does it actually cost, and is that number for one person or both. How do you tip when there are two therapists in the room. Can one of you get deep tissue while the other naps through a Swedish. And the quiet one nobody types into a search bar: is it going to be weird. Here are the plain answers, from a studio that runs couples sessions in Salt Lake City every day of the week.
The short answer
A couples massage is two full massages happening at the same time, in the same private room, with a dedicated therapist for each of you. At J Massage SLC it costs $165 for 60 minutes, total, for both people. Tip 15 to 20 percent of the full price, split between the two therapists, ideally in cash. You can each choose a completely different massage. And no, it is not weird. It stops feeling like a shared activity about ten minutes in, when you both stop talking.
What a couples massage actually is
Two tables, side by side, in one private suite. Each of you has your own Utah-licensed therapist, and both sessions begin at the same moment, so nobody is waiting in a lobby while the other person relaxes on a schedule. Before the hands-on work starts, each therapist checks in with their own client: pressure, problem areas, anything to avoid. Then the room goes quiet and the two sessions run in parallel, each one tailored to the body on that table. The full details are on our couples massage page.
What it is not: a shared table, taking turns, or one therapist splitting an hour between two people. If a price somewhere looks too good, that is usually the version being sold.
Is it awkward? The first-timer question
This is the concern that keeps people from booking, so let us deal with it directly. You undress to your own comfort level, in private, and you are under a sheet the entire session with standard draping. The therapists leave the room while you settle in and knock before they return. You can talk to each other, though almost nobody does for long. The usual arc is a few whispered comments, then silence, then someone lightly snoring. It is the rare date where ignoring each other means it is going well.
If one of you has never had a massage at all, a couples session is actually the gentle way in. You are next to someone you trust, your therapist adjusts pressure the moment you ask, and nothing happens without your say-so.
What a couples massage costs in Salt Lake City
At J Massage SLC, the couples rate is $165 for 60 minutes, $245 for 90, and $325 for 120. Those numbers are the total for both people. That matters, because many spas quote couples work per person, so the figure on a menu can quietly double before you reach the front desk. When you compare studios around Salt Lake City, check whether the price covers one body or two.
A few honest notes on our math. Two hours for two people is $325, which is five dollars less than booking two separate hours. Not a windfall, just honest math for people who want the longer session. Add-ons are flat and small: hot stones or cupping for $20 each. And payment is simple: a $5 processing fee applies to card payments, cash has no fee, and nothing else is added on top. The menu price is the price. Full rates for everything are on our pricing page.
Which length should you book: 60, 90, or 120 minutes?
Sixty minutes is the honest default. It covers a full-body session for each of you at a comfortable pace, and for a first couples massage it is plenty. Book it if you are testing the waters, working around dinner reservations, or gifting an experience to someone who has never been on a massage table.
Ninety minutes is for couples who know one of them has a problem area. The extra half hour lets each therapist do a complete full-body session and still spend real time where it is needed, a stubborn shoulder on one table, a runner's calves on the other, without rushing either. If you tend to leave massages wishing there had been ten more minutes on the one spot that mattered, this is the fix.
Two hours is the occasion length. Nobody needs 120 minutes; that is what makes it a gift. It is the one where the afternoon is cleared, the phones are off, and the biggest decision either of you makes before dinner is face up or face down. At $325 for both of you, it is also the length where the math leans furthest in your favor.
How tipping works with two therapists
Tipping a couples massage confuses people because there are two therapists and one bill. The arithmetic is simpler than it looks. Each therapist gave one person a complete massage, so tip as if each of you got a solo session. The standard in Salt Lake City is the standard everywhere: 15 to 20 percent of the full service price, which on a $165 hour for two works out to roughly $25 to $33 total, split between the two therapists.
Three details worth knowing. First, tip on the full price, not the discounted one, if you used a gift card or a promotion; the therapists did the same work either way. Second, cash is preferred, because it reaches the therapist directly and immediately. Third, at any spa, it is fair to ask whether a service charge is already included before you add more. We do not add one. Tips here are appreciated and never required, which is also what our FAQ says, because it is true.
Can you each pick a different massage? Yes.
This is the most useful and least known fact about couples massage. Because each of you has your own therapist, you can each book a different modality. The sessions run side by side, customized independently. Some pairings we see every week:
- Swedish + deep tissue. The classic. One of you wants to unwind, the other has a shoulder knot with a first name. Swedish for calm, deep tissue for the knot.
- Sports + Swedish. One of you skied Alta into the ground on Saturday. Sports massage handles the legs; Swedish handles the spectator.
- Prenatal + Swedish. Expecting couples book this more than you would guess. Prenatal for mom, side-lying and supported; Swedish or deep tissue for the partner one table over.
- Deep tissue + deep tissue. Some couples share everything, including desk jobs.
Tell us what each of you wants when you book, or just tell your therapists in the room. Either works.
Couples massage vs 4-hand massage
These two get mixed up constantly, so here is the distinction. A couples massage is two people, each with one therapist. A 4-hand massage is one person with two therapists working in synchronized rhythm. Both start at $165 for 60 minutes at our studio. If you book a 4-hand thinking it was a couples massage, you are about to become the most relaxed person in the building, and your partner is in the lobby. Read the booking page twice; we will also catch it when we confirm.
Anniversaries, date nights, and gifts
Most couples sessions here are attached to something: an anniversary, a birthday, a reunion after a work trip, a first date brave enough to skip the coffee shop. The private suite does the heavy lifting. There is no restaurant noise to talk over and no movie to disagree about, just an hour where the only job either of you has is to be horizontal. Plenty of couples also book with no occasion at all, which might be the strongest endorsement we can offer.
If you are gifting a couples massage rather than booking one, a gift card is the clean way to do it. Choose any amount from $25 to $500, it arrives by email within minutes, and it is redeemable for any service, so the couple picks their own date and their own massages. It solves the anniversary-gift problem in about ninety seconds, and nobody has to pretend to like another candle.
How to book, and what to do before you arrive
Book online at /book, where the couples option preselects and shows the price on each duration button, or call (801) 288-1118. We are open every day from 10am to 10pm, which makes an evening couples session an easy date that does not depend on anyone cooking. Same-day works surprisingly often on weekdays; for Friday and Saturday evenings, book a few days ahead. Anniversaries and Valentine's week, earlier still.
Before you arrive: come in about ten minutes early to get settled, eat light rather than not at all, and drink water before and after, because Salt Lake City sits above 4,000 feet and the dry air dehydrates you faster than you notice. Phones stay in your pockets or your cubby. Afterward, keep the evening slow. A couples massage followed by errands is a waste of a couples massage.
