What Is Prenatal Massage?

Massage Built for the Pregnant Body

Prenatal massage is not simply regular massage adapted for pregnancy — it is a specialized discipline that accounts for the profound physiological changes the body undergoes during each trimester. Positioning, technique, pressure, and focus areas are all recalibrated to support the pregnant body rather than work against it.

At J Massage SLC, our prenatal sessions use a full side-lying support system — not face-down tables or flat back positioning — to keep both mother and baby safe and comfortable. Sessions focus on the lower back, hips, sacrum, legs, and the shoulder tension that builds as the body's center of gravity shifts. The result is genuine physical relief that you can feel the moment you stand up from the table.

Five Ways Prenatal Massage Supports Your Pregnancy

Pregnancy places extraordinary demands on the body. These benefits address the most common sources of discomfort — and the results compound with every session.

Reduced Back Pain

As the baby grows, the body's center of gravity shifts dramatically forward, placing enormous strain on the lower back, sacrum, and hips. Prenatal massage directly addresses this mechanical stress — releasing the muscle groups that are compensating for the postural shift and providing the kind of relief that no stretch or pillow can replicate.

Less Swelling

Edema — swelling in the hands, feet, and ankles — is one of the most uncomfortable aspects of late pregnancy, caused by increased blood volume and reduced circulation efficiency. Prenatal massage promotes lymphatic drainage and venous return, meaningfully reducing swelling. Many clients notice a visible difference within 24 hours of a session.

Better Sleep

Sleep disruption is nearly universal during pregnancy — between physical discomfort, hormonal fluctuations, and an active mind, true rest can feel impossible. Prenatal massage triggers the release of serotonin and melatonin while reducing cortisol, creating an ideal hormonal environment for deeper, longer sleep. Most clients sleep significantly better the night of their session.

Reduced Anxiety

Pregnancy brings extraordinary joy — and extraordinary anxiety. Prenatal massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress hormones that can negatively affect both mother and baby. Research has shown that regular prenatal massage is associated with reduced rates of prenatal depression and lower levels of anxiety throughout pregnancy.

Improved Circulation

Blood volume increases by nearly 50% during pregnancy, placing significant additional demand on the circulatory system. Prenatal massage improves venous return, reduces the pooling of blood in the extremities, and supports placental circulation — benefiting not just the mother's comfort but the baby's nutrient supply as well.

Everything You Want to Know

  • Prenatal massage is safe for most healthy pregnant women when performed by a therapist trained in prenatal technique. At J Massage SLC, our therapists understand which areas to avoid, how to position the body safely at each stage of pregnancy, and what pressure levels are appropriate. We use a side-lying position supported by specialized pillows — never prone (face-down) positioning. Prenatal massage is generally contraindicated in the first trimester or for pregnancies with complications such as placenta previa or preeclampsia. We always recommend consulting your OB or midwife before booking.

  • Prenatal massage is most commonly recommended during the second and third trimesters — typically from week 13 onward. Many therapists and healthcare providers advise caution during the first trimester (weeks 1–12). If you are in your first trimester and wish to book, we strongly recommend getting written clearance from your OB or midwife first. During the second and third trimesters, prenatal massage is highly beneficial and can be received as frequently as every two to three weeks throughout the remainder of your pregnancy.

  • Prenatal massage differs from standard massage in positioning, technique, and focus areas. Rather than lying face-down or flat on the back, prenatal clients are positioned on their side using a full support system of specialized bolsters and pillows. Certain pressure points associated with labor induction in traditional medicine are avoided. And the session focuses on the areas most stressed by pregnancy: the lower back, hips, sacrum, shoulders, legs, and feet. This is a session specifically engineered for the pregnant body — not simply a standard massage performed on a pregnant person.

  • For most healthy pregnancies in the second or third trimester, a doctor's note is not required. However, we strongly recommend consulting your healthcare provider before your first prenatal massage, especially if you have any pregnancy complications, are considered high-risk, or are in your first trimester. If your provider has indicated any restrictions on physical activity or bodywork, please inform your therapist during the intake process. When in doubt, a quick call to your OB or midwife takes only a few minutes and gives you complete peace of mind.
